Nettie’s Army

Why we're fundraising...

Next Sunday, 19th October, my sister and I will be running the Target Ovarian Cancer 10k.

We do this every year in memory of our mum, Jeanette, who sadly passed away in 2019 after a brave 5-year battle with ovarian cancer. She fought incredibly hard, but as many of you might know, ovarian cancer is often called the “silent killer” – it’s regularly misdiagnosed until it’s too late.

It’s so important to raise awareness of the symptoms, which are often overlooked:

- Persistent bloating

- Feeling full quickly or loss of appetite

- Pelvic or abdominal pain

- Needing to wee more urgently or more often

This cause is very personal to me. I carry the BRCA2 gene, which increases the risk of developing cancers such as breast, ovarian, prostate, and pancreatic cancer. In fact, women with BRCA2 have up to a 44% lifetime risk of ovarian cancer and up to a 69% risk of breast cancer.

I was diagnosed with BRCA2 at 21, and after a lot of research and conversations with genetics specialists, I made the decision to have a preventative double mastectomy in 2020. It wasn’t an easy decision, but it felt like the right step to reduce my risks and give me peace of mind for the future. (To read more, please see this article: https://lnkd.in/eExY9aWF)

Over the years of posting about ovarian cancer, the BRCA gene, or my surgery, I’ve been inundated with messages and questions. If you ever want to reach out, please do — I can only share my experience, but I’m always open to talking about it. By having these conversations, we can help raise awareness and, hopefully, save lives.

This run isn’t just about fundraising – it’s about keeping the conversation going, breaking down the stigma, and encouraging people to act early if something feels wrong.

If you would like to support us, any donations to Target Ovarian Cancer would mean the world and go towards life-saving research, support, and awareness.

Target Ovarian Cancer is the UK's leading ovarian cancer charity working to improve early diagnosis, fund life-saving research and provide support to women with ovarian cancer.

Awareness of ovarian cancer is low, its share of UK research funding has dropped and three quarters of women with ovarian cancer say they do not get the support they need.

Together we can make sure women in the UK have the best chances of survival and get the right support at the right time, in a way that's right for them.

Raise awareness. Fund research. Save lives.
